Within these photographs, medical imagery digitally combined with images of fabrics reveal hauntingly ethereal portraits of people when they are their most vulnerable. Alterwitz exposes these emotions with stark bluntness and at other times with tenderness. While the details of the skin and features are blurred, lost in the medical scan, expression can be seen in the tilt of a head, the rise of a chin, the lean of a shoulder. Combined with the layering of fabric images, the result is an eerie enshrouding of faces and figures that addresses notions of loss and remembrance, enlightenment and anger, and life and death. The fabrics, which are typically used to clothe our bodies, are stripped away and blended with the images of our internal organs and structures revealing beauty as it reflects life, contemporary culture, and the intense realities of everyday life, shedding light on the struggles and fears related to being human.
